Citizen Action of New York is a statewide, grassroots membership organization that fights for social, racial, economic, and environmental justice.
We organize in communities to build power.
We collaborate with organizations and coalitions in communities across New York to win on key issues and elect progressive candidates at the local, state and federal levels.
Our member-driven organizing campaigns focus on issues at the state, local, and federal levels, including climate justice, ending mass incarceration, public education funding, housing, health care, money in politics and taxing the rich.
We organize major statewide coalitions and campaigns fighting for bold policy changes.
Citizen Action plays a leadership role in organizing major statewide coalitions and campaigns fighting for bold policy changes including Fair Elections for New York, #FREEnewyork, #SchoolsNotJails, , Health Care for All New York Coalition and now the Housing Justice for All campaign.
In the climate area, the main coalition Citizen Action works with is NY Renews.
We’re looking to add a statewide organizer to our team to support our climate justice campaign.

The person in this position will do statewide work, and coordinate local and statewide grassroots climate work in 3 regions of upstate New York (Central New York, the Southern Tier and the Capital District).
Traveling to these regions (for the regions the candidate doesn’t live in) will be a significant portion of the work.
We are prioritizing in hiring a current resident of one of these regions; a requirement of the position is to live in, or move to upstate New York.
The Statewide Climate Justice Organizer will report to the Policy and Research Director (“Citizen Action Policy Director”), who also directs our climate campaign.

The remainder of the position is to serve as an organizer for Citizen Action; the duties assigned may include assistance with other statewide campaigns or with chapter activities in one or more of the three regions.
The primary responsibility of the Statewide Climate Justice Organizer is building grassroots support to advance NY Renews’ and Citizen Action’s climate justice work working in collaboration with the Citizen Action Policy Director and NY Renews staff.
Responsibilities include: Building and/or expanding local coalitions on climate justice in the 3 regions assigned.
Driving a grassroots, leadership-development organizing strategy to build the power to win climate justice in communities across New York; Supporting the development and implementation of our climate justice campaign strategy; Coordinating campaign operations with coalition and organizational partnerships; Public education & issue education of staff/member-leaders across all regions; Supporting the training and leadership development of people directly impacted; If needed, assisting in drafting and editing campaign materials, talking points, organizer toolkits, and other advocacy documents; Organizing action days, actions, mobilizations, phone banks,lobbying, media coverage and other activities as part of our climate justice campaign; Supporting social media and digital organizing strategy.
Responsible for regularly communicating campaign updates and needs to NY Renews, coalition partners and Citizen Action staff, members and volunteers Performing administrative duties including scheduling of meetings, composing routine correspondence, note taking.
Helping to coordinate, plan, and execute internal & external meetings, strategy sessions and public events while ensuring that leadership takes part inf these activities.
Recruitingdiverse coalition partners into the climate justice work of the organization and our coalitions Public speaking, media appearances, and delivery of testimony before public bodies.
Any other relevant work as assigned by the supervisor Who you are and what you've accomplished: At least three years of experience organizing issue and /or electoral campaigns; Highly organized and able to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment; Experience working with a diverse coalition of grassroots, policy, elected and advocacy partners; Excellent verbal and written communication skills; A creative approach to problem-solving, including strong analytic, strategic and planning skills; Ability for regular statewide travel, including having a reliable car; Ability to work evenings and weekends Statewide work, position based in upstate, NY.
Extra Credit: Understanding of climate policy issues.
(If not, must demonstrate a willingness to gain a thorough understanding of climate justice policy after appropriate training.
) Experience with Microsoft & Google suites.
Familiarity with databases & tracking systems.
Knowledge of local, federal, and/or New York State politics.
Thorough knowledge of organizing and political campaign strategies, planning and execution.
Demonstrated success in organizing communities on issue campaigns through activities like list building, phone banking and canvassing, committee creation and support, direct action event planning, and membership recruitment.
Ability to work independently with members and elected leaders in complex political situations.
Ability to develop and maintain good working relationships and to work in a team.
A deep commitment to racial, gender, and economic justice.
