GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: The Medical Assistant (MA)/Outreach Worker assists School-Based Health licensed medical providers and Program Director in providing high quality health care services and ensure administrative functions are performed in an efficient and accurate manner.
Conduct outreach activities to increase enrollment and to maximize reimbursement for services rendered.
Ensure an optimum safe environment, and compliance with local, State and Federal regulations (i.
e.
OSHA, JCAHO, NYSDOH, and NYSED).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
MEDICAL ASSISTANT:
Demonstrate knowledge, skills and ability to provide medical assistance to the age group served in the school-based health program including, knowledge of normal growth and development, age-specific safety precautions and ability to communicate in an age-specific manner to patients and caregivers.
Schedule and coordinate appointments, follow-up on missed appointments and conduct outreach prior to appointments to make sure appropriate health and insurance information and consent to treat is obtained prior.
Verify insurance information.
Assist with screenings, weighing and measuring of students, and preparation for activities such as physical examinations.
Complete required documentation and assist with maintenance of electronic medical record, practice management system, and program specific logs and reports in a timely and appropriate fashion with minimal assistance or overtime.
Prepare and maintain exam rooms and office spaces, such as stocking supplies and sterilizing equipment, in accordance with organization and program policies and procedures.
When school nurse is absent, operates within scope of practice, under specific protocols, shared with school staff/ administration, for the delivery of first aid and emergency care of students.
Participates in quality improvement and patient safety activities as assigned.
OUTREACH:
Assure that students are enrolled in the school-based health program.
Assist families with eligibility screening, insurance applications, housing assistance, emergency financial assistance, and other non-medical needs critical to maintaining health and well-being, by maintaining and utilizing community referral resources.
Conduct outreach to students and their families referring those without a primary care provider to facilitated enrollers.
Develop and maintain relationships with community agencies and businesses to promote Health Care programs and to expand referral network and participate in community events such as health fairs.
Disseminate educational pamphlets, brochures and other promotional materials.
Assist in covering evening activities as assigned.
Provides outreach services for the entire Health Center as assigned.
OTHER DUTIES:
Understand and effectively communicate HIPAA compliance, corporate compliance and patient confidentiality, keeping patient information in the strictest of confidence.
Ensure and/or remain in compliance with local, state, and federal regulation, (i.
e.
OSHA, JCAHO, NYSDOH, and NYSED).
Adhere to the National Patient Safety Goals as defined by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and the Whitney M.
Young Jr.
Health Services Inc.
Rotation coverage at School-Based Health Program sites, Albany Health Center and Troy Health Center as assigned.
Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduate from an accredited school in medical assisting.
(five (5) years’s experience working as a Medical Assistant in a physician/hospital setting may be substituted in lieu of graduation from an accredited school in medical assisting.
One year experience as a Medical Assistant.
Certified in CPR and First Aid
Familiarity with target population and community resources.
Ability to work cooperatively and effectively.
Demonstrate excellence in both internal and external customer service.
Employ professional telephone, writing, computer and interpersonal skills.
Demonstrate cultural sensitivity.
Must have a valid NYS driver’s license.
Flexibility to adjust to schedule changes.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
One to two years experience as a Medical Assistant in a physician office setting.
One to two years community outreach experience.
Knowledge of managed care requirements.
