*DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS*: This position will involve conducting medical –legal investigations and examination of deaths reported to the Office of the County Medical Examiners and to assist in determining the jurisdiction of the County Medical Examiners over such cases.
The incumbent in this position works under the direct supervision of the Public Health Director who reviews the work for satisfactory performance and conformance to existing standards and laws.
A Medico-Legal Death Investigator also does related work as required.

* Conducts medical-legal investigations of deaths reported to the Office of the State Medical Examiners;
* Assists in determining the jurisdiction of the Office of the State Medical Examiners over death cases reported;
* Investigates circumstances, when appropriate, surrounding medical-legal deaths, including evidence and body examination at scenes and reports such findings to the Chief Medical Examiner or one of his/her designates;
* Obtain medical, police, occupational or other historical data on cases accepted for jurisdiction;
* Obtain and record adequate information in order to produce the issuance of a complete certificate of death;
* Compile official reports of investigations, findings and interpretations;
* Assists in/arrange for body transportation of decedents to the Morgue for autopsy;
* Perform various administrative duties as assigned by the Chief Medical Examiner;
* Contact deceased medical provider;
* Notifies deceased next of kin;
* Assist law enforcement in securing the site and take possession of valuable as indicated;
* Attend autopsy of deceased;
* Write and/or dictate investigative reports;
* Arrange for medical signature on death certificate;
* Work in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, District Attorney’s Office, as well as any other community agency as indicated;
* Does related work as required.
*REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:* Working knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques required in the performance of medical-legal investigations; ability to obtain and record the information needed for the adequate evaluation of deaths of medico-legal significance; ability to communicate with police and other investigation agencies; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; tact and courtesy; physical commensurate with the demands of the position.
*MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:* Either
* (a) Five (5) years experience as a police officer with at least three (3) years of full time service in homicide and/or major crime investigation; *or*
* (b) One (1) year of paid or unpaid experience in the field of Death Investigator; *and *Certification\* as a Medico-Legal Death Investigator by New York State Association of County Coroners and Medical Examiners within four (4) years of hire date.
\*Certification by the New York State Association of County Coroners and Medical Examiners requires 54 credits of education offered by the Association.
Appropriate credits in medical-legal death from the American Medical Association may be accepted toward Certification in some instances.
